History of Chocolate - for Health and Weight Loss! Cocoa has been a treasured food for centuries. The Mayans and Aztecs believed that chocolate gave them wisdom, energy, vitality, and sexual power.

They consumed cocoa in a bitter drink called “tchocolatl,” which was served at festivities and given to men before they went into battle.

The drink was often thickened with corn meal to make a biscuit or wafer. Cocoa was soon given the name “food of the gods” to reflect its incredible value and significance.

When Christopher Columbus came to the New World, he used cocoa beans as a form of currency. Later when Hernan Cortes arrived, the Aztec emperor believed he was a god and introduced him to the prized tchocolatl drink.

Cortes was given a large cocoa plantation, and because he recognized the economic potential of cocoa beans, he began to ship them back to Spain in the early 1500’s. Here they discovered that adding sugar improved the taste, and they kept this new sweet drink a secret for nearly a century.

In the 1600’s, cocoa was introduced to other parts of Europe as well as their North American colonies. Milk chocolate, as we know today, was first introduced to the world in 1875 by Henri Nestlé.

Once the first chocolate bar was made in England, the popularity of this delicious treat soon spread worldwide.

Historical, European documents indicate that many believed chocolate had mood enhancing and medicinal properties. This, along with its delicious taste, has led chocolate to become one of the most sought after foods in the world.
